We are delighted to be taking Pertencia, our co-producion with the Portuguese company Teatro do Montemuro, to the National Theatre in Lisbon from Fri 17 - Sun 19 June.
Click here to be taken to Teatro Nacional website (page translated into English).
This brand new play - which toured Portugal in Oct/Nov 10 and the UK in March 2011 - tells the story of Pertencia. Abandoned outside The Butcher's shop as a young child, she spends her life inventing stories to escape the harsh world in which she has been abandoned.
A cast of six actors from the two companies portray a host of vivid characters and mix a fusion of languages: portuguese, english, live music, song and physical imagery. By turns lyrical and grotesque, poignant and funny, this extraordinary production moves between the real and fantastical as Pertencia uncovers the reality of The Butcher's business and the dark revelation of her past.
Pertencia is a collaboration between Foursight Theatre and the Portuguese company Teatro do Montemuro. Foursight is a female-led company that has been touring nationally and internationally for the past twenty-four years. It has gained an exceptional reputation for creating unusual, uncompromising and multi-disciplinary work. Pertencia is created in collaboration with Teatro do Montemuro, a male-led company from rural Portugal. Both companies share a commitment to creating vibrant new theatre through a highly collaborative creative process.
